Aerobic rice is a renewed way of growing rice in non-submerged unpuddled condition in aerated soils. Aerobic rice is grown like any other crops like Maize or Sorghum on dry soils with surface irrigations provided when necessary with intensive agronomic practices.

Aerobic rice is a projected sustainable rice production methodology for the immediate future to address water scarcity and environmental safety in the scenario of global warming.

Aerobic rice varieties developed for the purpose yield as much as irrigated puddled rice varieties traditionally grown in rice paddies.

In a pioneering effort in 2007 March, India officially released for cultivation its first drought tolerant Aerobic Rice Variety
MAS 946-1 followed by MAS 26 (2008) at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, India.

Yields were on par with irrigated puddled rice with an average of 5.5-6/ha with
60 percent less water. Aerobic rice emits 80-85 percent lesser methane gas into the atmosphere thus keeping the environment safe. Savings are also from land preparation, no transplanting costs, seed costs and labor costs.
